Exercise therapy, including resistance and aerobic exercise is included in most clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). A key barrier to implementing CPGs is the lack of engaging professional development resources that cover the principles of exercise prescription and progression, including how to apply them.

Step 1: The knowledge of, and confidence in applying the principles of exercise prescription and progression in Victorian physiotherapists will be evaluated using an online survey and quiz, developed by the multi-disciplinary research team using key exercise literature.

Step 2: Multimedia resources will be created to fill knowledge gaps, identified in ‘Step 1’, including how to apply principles of exercise prescription and progression. Resources will be housed on a La Trobe University hosted web portal and mobile platform application.

Step 3: Evaluation of improvements in working knowledge of, and confidence in applying principles of exercise prescription and progression, and user feedback from focus groups be used to optimise resources.

This project is expected to finish by the end of 2017 and deliver an online information portal to support physiotherapists and students in applying exercise prescription principles when treating patients with musculoskeletal conditions.
