“It felt like I had broken my leg” – Kate Sheahan on her ACL injury on the weekend
In light of the 6 ACL injuries sustained by players at the half way mark of the 8 week AFL Women’s competition this an opportune time to share this and answer what many seem to be unsure of…
Why are females more at risk of serious knee injury?
And what can we do about it?
There is no one contributing factor or magical exercise to prevent these devastating injuries. However, the below information is somewhere to start.
The above should provide some guidance at this present time. A multitude of factors play a part into that excruciating moment and many we have no control over, but what we can do is focus on things that we can modify. I can assure you, advising girls that they shouldn’t be playing such physical and demanding sports will not go down well and the benefits to them and the community far outway the negatives!
As a sports medicine profession we hope that we can educate the community on this topic to improve the implementation of injury prevention programs at a grassroots level. This will go a long way to ensuring females continue to thrive and survive the rigours of competitive and physical sport.
