Optimising outcomes for people with knee pain through food (FEAST)
The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of different nutrition strategies on knee pain, swelling, stiffness, and movement difficulties. This information will help improve patient care and reduce the risk of knee pain.
This project is funded through both the Australian Government and private philanthropy and has been approved by the University’s Human Research Ethics Committee (HEC22044).
You may be eligible if:
- You are between 45-85 years of age
- You have had knee pain for at least 3 months
- You are not planning to have knee surgery in the next 6 months

Why should I participate?
Our goal is to help people with knee pain and try to:
- Improve your function in everyday life
- Reduce your pain and stiffness
- Help improve and maintain the health of your joints
What will I be asked to do?
If you participate, you will receive a free DEXA scan, comprehensive functional assessment, blood test and dietitian consultation at La Trobe University, Bundoora. You will then be randomly allocated to one of two different nutrition programs to assess if they can help improve the pain, swelling, stiffness, and movement difficulties associated with your knee pain. Both involve following an eating pattern for 12 weeks, with support from qualified dietitians and will be provided at no cost to you. Don’t worry – you won’t be asked to reduce the amount you eat, just the different types of food you eat. You will then be reassessed at 12-weeks and 6-months to assess any changes in your pain and function over time. Your travel costs to attend the assessments will be reimbursed.
