Welcome to BRACE-ACL
The aim of this research project is to investigate the influence of wearing an elastic knee brace on knee symptoms and biomechanics in those who have previously had an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.
This project is funded by the Australian Government and has been approved by the University’s Human Research Ethics Committee.
Am I eligible?
To be eligible, you need to:
- Have had ACL reconstruction surgery 1 – 8 years previously
- Be aged 18-45 years
- Be willing to wear an elastic knee brace during physical activity for 6 weeks
Why should I participate?
Many people who have had an ACL reconstruction do not recover to a level that they are satisfied with. It is important to investigate interventions that can improve outcomes in those with persistent knee symptoms.
Elastic knee braces can be worn to support the knee and may help to reduce symptoms during physical activity. Studies have explored whether elastic knee braces can be helpful for those with knee osteoarthritis, but not in individuals following ACL reconstruction. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether wearing an elastic knee brace influences knee symptoms and biomechanics after ACL reconstruction.
What will I be asked to do?
Participation in this research involves a free comprehensive physiotherapy knee assessment (strength, function, biomechanics) at La Trobe University, Bundoora. During this session, we will ask you to wear an elastic knee brace to assess if it can immediately improve your knee discomfort and function. Following this assessment, there is a 2:1 chance (totally random) that we will provide you with a free elastic knee brace (Genutrain from Bauerfiend, valued at $170) to wear daily and keep. If you don’t receive the brace immediately, we will still provide you with the exact same brace for free at the follow-up assessment session at La Trobe University 6 weeks later. All assessment and treatment associated with the study will be at no cost to you.
