Luke Keaney

Luke Keaney is a former Gaelic footballer from Donegal in Ireland. Gaelic Football is one of Ireland’s national games and players are amateur athletes. They spend their time balancing either working a full-time job or being a student, with training which can demand up to 30 hours per week. While an amateur sport, gaelic footballers are highly skilled and elite athletes, with the sport requiring them to catch, kick, tackle and cover up to 15km over the course of a 70-minute match. GAA is very unique sport, as you represent the county where you were born and the community you grew up in – with players rarely ever moving teams.

Luke played for his club Four Masters, represented both UCD and UUJ in college competitions, and lined out for his county Donegal for over 10 years across a variety of age groups in various provincial and all-Ireland competitions. This demand resulted in Luke, on average, playing for 6 teams in a calendar year. Unfortunately, and as a result of this demand, Luke was forced to retired from gaelic football at age of 24 due significant hip injuries, which ultimately required 5 hip surgeries. Since recovering from these operations, Luke has started competing in rowing both nationally and international, and he represented Ireland at World Beach Offshore Championships in Portugal 2021 and Home International in Wales 2023.
