SHAPING THE FUTURE OF KNEE HEALTH IN AUSTRALIA
AUSTRALIAN KNEE INJURY STUDY

Welcome to the Australian Knee Injury Study

Knee injuries are very common in young Australians. To improve the quality of care for knee injuries, it is important to know what factors contribute to a successful outcome. By establishing a national Australian Knee Injury Study, this project aims to understand the type of care people receive after their knee injury and to determine the long-term outcomes of different knee injuries.

More specifically, this study aims to:

  1. Understand healthcare pathways for people with an acute knee injury;
  2. Identify healthcare system and patient-related predictors of treatment pathway (e.g., surgical vs non-surgical, uptake of rehabilitation);
  3. Determine the prognosis of different knee injuries and treatment pathway outcomes.

This project is funded by the Australian Government and has been approved by the University’s Human Research Ethics Committee (HEC24160) and the the Alfred Hospital Ethics Committee (HREC113852).

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are an Australian resident
  • Sustained a knee injury in the past 6 months
  • Sought, or are planning to seek, healthcare for your knee injury
  • Are able to understand written English

If you think you fit these criteria, please click on the registration link above to provide your email to receive the initial questions.

Why should I participate?

The expected benefits to society in general are an increased understanding of the true extent of knee injuries, and their treatment, in Australia and their long-term outcomes. This information will be very valuable to improve the long-term outcomes and quality of life of Australians who sustain a knee injury.

What will I be asked to do?

Your participation in this research involves filling out online questions (5-10 mins) initially and 6 months after your injury. We will also ask you to complete some short questions (~5 mins) at 1, 2, 5 and 10 years following your knee injury to evaluate the long-term outcomes.

For clinicians

Your help in letting patients know about this study and referring them into the study is critical for the success of the Australian Knee Injury Study. This is an easy opportunity for you to be involved in a research project that will help to improve the long-term outcomes of Australians with a knee injury.

Benefits

  • Contribute to the improvement of long-term outcomes of Australians with a knee injury.
  • Access to evidence-updates on knee injury rehabilitation.
  • Easy way to get involved in a nationwide study.

How you can get involved

  • If appropriate, forward the patient recruitment flyer (available here: Patient flyer) or the study website (www.kneeinjurystudy.com.au) to all patients you have seen in the last 6 months with an ACL or meniscal injury/surgery, or any other acute knee injury.
  • From now on, notify all of your new patients with an acute knee injury about the study and ask them to register for the study (QR code on flyer: Patient flyer or website: www.kneeinjurystudy.com.au).
  • Display the recruitment flyer (Patient flyer) in your clinic waiting area or equivalent.
  • Enter your email using the link below to receive all the study information and the recruitment material.
